Exercises

The subsystem “Exercises” provides to teacher a number of possibilities for the creation and management the exercises. The homepage of the exercises shows all exercises of the course with the possibility of their management.

To create an exercise select the “New Exercise”. Then you need to fill a number of parameters of the exercise. Specifically you can set:

  • Exercise Name: You must enter the name of the exercise .
  • Exercise Description: if you wish you can fill in a short description which summarizes your exercise.
  • Exercise Type: this option specifies whether the questions of the exercise will be displayed all on one page, or displayed a question per page.
  • Start-End: you can set the effective date of this exercise and its expiry date. This parameter is quite useful for exam procedures (limited hours and days).
  • Caching: using this option you can disable caching in an exercise.
  • Time limit: Select whether to set time limits for completion by the learners of your exercise.
  • Permitted repeats: Specify how many times can the same user to repeat this exercise
  • Random questions: please state if you wish to exercise your randomly selecting a certain number of questions than those which are set to belong to the current exercise.
  • Replies: select whether or not you wish to appear at the end of the exercise results.
  • Score: select whether or not you wish to appear at the end of the score.
  • Unlock with password: specify whether you want users to have access to your password through exercise
  • Unlock specific IP (s): specify the addresses that you would like to have access to this exercise
  • Assign: this option defines which categories of learners will be available this exercise
  • Labels (Tags): associate the current exercise with a label. This feature is quite useful for searching through label in the future.

The above process is completed by selecting the “Create” link.

Then you need to enter the questions which will be included in this exercise. This can be done by creating a new question or by choosing from a question that exists in the “Question Bank” link.

Procedure to create- import questions in exercise


To create a new question just click the link “New question” link. Then select the category which will own your question. Enter the name of the question and if desired an optional comment

Select the degree of difficulty of the question by means of the scroll bar. If your exercise is associated with an image then by selecting “Browse” transfer from your local disk to question the particular image. Then select the type of question. The available options are:

  1. Multiple Choice (Single Answer)
  2. Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers)
  3. Fill in the Blanks
  4. Fill in the Blanks with predefined answers
  5. Matching
  6. True-False
  7. Free text
Create new question


The process of creating a new question is completed by selecting the link “OK”. When the trainer has created a new exercise then he is given the opportunity to see (preview) the questions and answers of the particular exercise. This is simply done by clicking on the name of the exercise. An example of exercise is given in the figure below.

Here, we need to emphasize whether the trainer wishes to perform the exercise should go to the main page of the exercises and choose the top-right rotation switch (trainer-trainee) and change through this role to a trainee. With this change it is possible to perform the exercise and see the screens that the trainees have access to.

*** The “Exercises” subsystem offers instructors a range of features related to creating and managing exercises. The initial page of the exercise subsystem displays all course exercises, allowing for their management.

Central Exercise Page

To create an exercise, select the “New exercise” link and then fill in a series of its parameters. Specifically, you will need to define the following parameters:

  • Exercise Name: You must enter the name of the exercise.
  • Exercise Description: If desired, you can provide a brief description of the exercise.
  • Completion Text: This is text that will be displayed to trainees after they complete the exercise.
  • Display: Determine whether all exercise questions will appear on one page or one question per page. There's also a new option: “One question per page with no return to previous questions.”
  • Grading Scale: Select the appropriate grading scale.
  • Start-End: You can set the start and end dates for the validity of this exercise. This parameter is quite useful for examination processes (specific days and times).

Display Completion Text after Exercise Completion

Temporary Save: Through this option, you can enable or disable temporary saving for an exercise.

Time Limit: Choose whether you want to set time limits for trainees to complete your exercise.

Allowed Attempts: Determine how many times the same user can repeat this exercise. It should be noted that a value of 0 for allowed attempts corresponds to “infinite” attempts by trainees.

Answers: Choose whether or not you want the exercise results to be displayed at the end of the exercise, or for the results to be displayed after the trainee's last attempt. You also have the option to enable the display of answers after the exercise's end date.

Score: Choose whether or not you want the exercise score to be displayed at the end of the exercise, or for the score to be displayed after the trainee's last attempt. You also have the option to enable the display of the score after the exercise's end date.

Assign to: This option defines which categories of trainees this exercise will be available to (all trainees, specific trainees, user groups).

Continue Attempt: Here you can set the time limit in minutes that a trainee has to reconnect and continue completing the exercise. This function is activated if a trainee experiences a computer malfunction during the exercise (network connection interruption, power outage).
