Safe Exam Browser (SEB) Support

The Exercises subsystem allows the creation of electronic assessment exams. Through the integration of Safe Exam Browser (SEB), the instructor can ensure the integrity of the process. The SEB software locks the learner's computer, preventing access to other applications, websites, or resources during the exam. A prerequisite for using this feature is the global activation of the SEB extension by the Administrator (Admin) of the Open eClass platform. At the same time, both the instructor (for testing purposes) and the learners must have already installed the SEB application locally on their computers.

To install the application, the user visits the official software download website (safeexambrowser.org/download) and downloads the appropriate version depending on their device's operating system (Windows, macOS, or iOS). Then, they run the installation file and follow the wizard instructions without modifying the default settings. After the installation is complete, no manual configuration or opening of the application is required, as Open eClass will automatically launch it with the correct specifications. If the feature is available, log into the online course and select the “Exercises” tool from the left navigation menu. On the home screen of the subsystem, click on the “New Exercise” link located at the top of the page. In the configuration form that appears, fill in the Exercise Name and optionally a brief description with the exam instructions. The time constraints and exam flow that follow are a critical stage of the configuration. The instructor defines the exact duration of the exam in minutes, specifies the dates and times for the start and end of the exercise's visibility, and selects the single allowed attempt to ensure the integrity of the process, finishing by saving the settings.

Once the general framework is created, the instructor proceeds to add the questions by clicking the corresponding option. They have the ability to insert multiple-choice questions with a single or multiple answers, true/false questions, fill-in-the-blanks, as well as free-text or open-ended questions that require manual grading. For each question, the prompt, possible answers, and corresponding score are entered before its final creation. For the smooth execution of the process, it is recommended to create a mock exam a few days before the actual examination, so that learners can confirm they have properly installed the software on their devices.Upon completion of the creation process, in the main list of the “Exercises” subsystem, next to the title of the specific exam, a special marking with the SEB globe icon is now prominently displayed, indicating that access to the test is protected.

As soon as the learner clicks the button, the SEB application is automatically activated, locking their entire computer and hiding the taskbar, the Windows or Mac menu, and any other open application. In this second stage, the student's screen is completely cleared, and only the eClass environment is displayed in full screen. Here, they can see the countdown timer and exclusively answer the exam questions, without the ability to exit this window until they have completed and submitted their paper.
